I was very reluctant to sign up for Facebook when it came out. I thought it was a waste of time. When I finally decided to join my friends and family on Facebook, I was pleasantly surprised what people use it for. Not only do they keep up with friends and family, but they use it to get information. I remember brushing my teeth and my husband telling me there had just been an earthquake in California. One of his friends, in California, had just felt it. So instantly, we knew about it. The news finds you!
Another aspect of Facebook that I had not considered is doing research on products and services that Colorado Springs businesses offer. All I have to do is put in my status, “need a good painter, any suggestions?” Within 5 minutes I could have 3 or 4 names and phone numbers of referrals from my friends. Most people are more likely to take the suggestion of a friend over a phone book ad or TV commercial. Social media in Colorado Springs is changing how we shop for products and services, whether we like it or not.
Going to the phone book to find a phone number or business name is becoming a thing of the past. We go online! And many of us utilize our social media networks to find what we are looking for. Test my theory and go to your Facebook page and ask for a referral for a product or business. See how many responses you get. Social media is affecting our lives in more ways than one. If you are a business owner just think of how it can impact your business if you are the one who is being referred. People are talking about your business with or without you. Why not join the conversation.
